Americans generally take for granted their right to accurate information on their birth certificate. That is not the case for the nearly 5 million adoptees in this country.

We were not going to publish The Weekender this week because of the Veteran’s Day holiday, but, here we are. The new Prized Writing collection is published, annual Thiebaud lecture is Thursday night, Shinkoskey concert and Human Rights Film Festival also on tap the same day. And there’s still lots more to do. Unfortunately, today is the last day (for now) to see the Wayne Thiebaud exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum, which must close due to changes in Sacramento's status due to COVID restrictions. We hope the Crocker and all area museums can open again soon.

Instructors Continue Adaptation for Online, Remote Instruction

As students start summer studies this week, instructors are continuing their own learning and other efforts to adapt summer and fall courses for the remote environment.

“The faculty and graduate students are learning too,” said Kem Saichaie, associate director for learning and teaching support at the Center for Educational Effectiveness, or CEE. “It’s a model of lifelong learning.”

When Cameron Fitzpatrick began his technical writing course, the senior computer science major couldn’t have imagined the impact that it would have. He had a lot on his mind. Fitzpatrick, a Fremont-born transfer student, had a newborn son, Caleb, who had not been gaining weight, leaving doctors confused and concerned.

• Prized Writing — A celebration of the University Writing Program's 28th annual edition of undergraduate works from any discipline. This year’s book comprises 23 pieces selected from among more than 400 entries from the 2016-17 academic year.
