Early detection of tumors is extremely important in treating cancer. A new technique developed by researchers at the ��С��, Davis, offers a significant advance in using magnetic resonance imaging to pick out even very small tumors from normal tissue. The work is published May 25 in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

It was a party fit for a pop star at the ��С�� Comprehensive Cancer Center when cancer patient Makayla Abbe of Pine Grove (Amador County) arrived in a purple Mercedes limo and headed down the red carpet to debut her new music video, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and ��С�� Children’s Hospital. The 14-year-old signed autographs and took questions from throngs of adoring fans, with paparazzi in tow, all to fulfill her wish of being a “pop star for a day.”

Who has four legs, wears a black coat and works alongside medical staff? Huggie, the newest member of the ��С�� Comprehensive Cancer Center team and the first facility dog at ��С�� Health. The 2-year-old Labrador retriever supports children receiving treatments in the Pediatric Infusion Center.

Huggie works Monday through Friday with his foster mom and child life specialist Jenny Belke, to help normalize the environment and motivate pediatric patients, and reduce any fear, stress, anxiety or pain they may be feeling.

NEWS BRIEFS: No More Saturday Finals, Starting in the Fall

With approval by the UC Office of the President of a student-initiated recommendation, spring 2016 will be the last regular academic quarter to have exams occurring on a Saturday.

Campus leadership worked with ASUCD representatives to formulate the recommendation in response to students’ advocating for an end to Saturday exams and submitted it to UCOP about a year ago.
